10 years of Carnival Party

It was the year 2000 and a small bunch of masked enthusiasts gathered in front of a colourful truck parked in a little back alley and armed with soundspeakers. A decade later, the little back alley party approaches its 10th birthday as something truly unique: an international festival that has over the years hosted hundreds of artists and entertained thousands of party people, and still somehow managed to keep its soul. Still free, still fresh, still on the streets, still by the party people for the party people, never corporate, never sold out, and always true to its roots - uniting tradition and innovation, opening minds and expanding horizons, and above all, delivering the best electronic music of the moment.

If you can spare a minute of your time, we’d like to remind you just how the CP story unraveled. A bit of nostalgia for the older crew, and a bit of inspiration for the young ones.

Is it just a cosmic coincidence or a sign from the heavens that CP was born right at the beginning of the new millenium? In the midst of the traditional Rijeka Carnival chaos, a bright young lad from Marabunti team parked their „Millenium Bug“ truck in Zadar Street, his inspired friend brought a pair of turntables, and  the “zero” Carnival party happened as spontaneously and effortlessly as the best things in life usually do. Who were those young lads, the unnamed heroes of the Rijeka (and Croatia) party scene? We don’t know, but we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. They started something new, and like a snowflake starts an avalanche, things took their course and one led to another, and yet another, and it all happened the way things should happen, not because it was backed by money and power, but just because it was good and beautiful and worthy…

Marabunti team organized the first official CP a year later on the central Jadran square; practically every single Rijeka partygoer (and in those days Rijeka was full of partygoers!) turned up and rest assured, they all still remember that night. There was a unity in the air, a sense of something new, big and important happening, and we were all a part of it, and contributing to it, and it was ours as much as theirs, it was everyone’s…

And each year Carnival Party grew unstoppably, and it engulfed more and more streets, squares and clubs, and more and more people, like a tidal wave of beats and vibes…. It was the one night of the year when it didn’t matter if you were a raver, a punker or a jock, you would come anyway and forget who you were, and were what you wanted, and felt free, and enjoyed and…

And the good vibes of CP spread like only good vibes can spread, and people from all around heard of a party where anything’s possible, and they came from everywhere and they all took part and left their mark and carried on the vibe even further…

Ten CPs have gone by. For the team, it meant 10 years of working hard and partying harder. And for the people, well you know best what Carnival Party meant to you. Just try imagining the city without it, and you’ll be robbed of some of your greatest dancefloor experiences.
And in the end, it doesn’t matter how many DJs played, which countries they were from, or how “cool”, “innovative” and “trendy” they were. Nor does it matter which band played good, which media came, who was responsible for what and how many people turned up each year.
The only thing that matters in the whole CP story is how you felt. We hope it was as memorable for you as it was for us. And that one day, when you look back on the days of your youth, you will say with pride - I was a part of CP too…
